Russia and it's association with Blacks is rarely spoken about, even when in graduate school studying African American History was the idea even entertained that there might be a connection there. Too bad the classics are not taught in "regular" public school settings. Young people today miss out on so much, and I wonder if it is due to technical knowledge being increased?

I have not study Russian, so I limited myself to those I thought I could fully understand, but I did a graduate Fellowship with Dr. Allison Blakely an Historian very much into Russian history and it's association with Blacks and completed a paper on Blacks in Russian History and thought, I was impress with the concept of a Slave vs a Serf!

Yes, the other Russian author who's work I read was Vladimir Nabokov his "Lolita". Dostoevsky impressed me the most, maybe because of his influence on some of my favorite Black authors, Richard Wright, Ann Petry and Ralph Ellison. I am working on a literary piece now analyzing the novel "The Street" by Ann Petry to the novel "In A Loney Place" by Dorothy B. Hughes and their influence of Dostoevsky on their works, he made a impression on several women writers during the 40's and 50s and I would like to see what I discover.

Alright then, C. Lamar, not many people probably have read Dostoyevsky's "Notes From The Underground", one of my favorites also! I don't think Wright's wrote to make us cheer for the bad guy as much as he wrote to prove that a persons environment may have contributed to his behavior, maybe like in the movie, "The American Gangster". Quite possibly Richard Wright was a rebel at heart!

Thank you for the welcome note, yes, Black Boy is a real classic, and I refer to that type of writing done by Wright and Petry in that "protest novel" style often, we don't have many writers today who use that form.
